Relationship Development Intervention (RDI)® is a relatively new, trademarked autism therapy developed by clinical psychologists, Steven Gutstein, PhD, and Rachelle Sheely, PhD.
RDI® teaches children how to engage in social relationships with others. Techniques encourage children to read and respond to non-verbal communication.
At Capernaum, our therapists are frequently using strategies that are based on RDI® principles. Therapists change their behavior during play to get the attention of the child that typically is disinterested in the therapist. The therapist waits for the child’s response and interaction, and then continues with the activity. Activities are often focused on working together to achieve a goal (eg. working as a team to transfer laundry from the washer to the dryer). The key is to make non-verbal “connections” with one another during such tasks.
