STRATEGY OF THE MONTH

Implementing an Individualized Picture Book to Encourage Communication and Socialization!
1. Consider how you will use the picture book. Will it be used to:
             a. encourage smoother transitions and know the schedule for the day.
             b. allow for choice making throughout the day (eg. activities, foods, friends to play with, etc.)?
             c. share self-information, and probe conversation and socialization with peers?
2. What type and level of caregiver assistance will be needed for the picture book to be most effective? Once this is determined, document how the book will be used for a consistent approach by all who may use it with your child.
3. Where to start? Practice using the book with your child with familiar people, so they feel comfortable and confident, using it throughout their day in various settings!
4. Make sure it’s accessible to your child!!! Some families place this type of book in a child’s school backpack or have it on a ring attached to their belt, for easy access! If it’s not accessible, it won’t be used!!
