Making Running Errands with Kids Easier!
1. Plan for the transitions! Prepare a bag of snacks and a visual schedule.
2. Make your car a kid-friendly place! Offer favorite music and activities to do during the car ride (eg. activity books, matchbox cars, dolls, etc). Keep activities organized in a bag or box to limit visual over-stimulation.
3. Provide choices! Choosing the activity or music can often prevent challenging behavior and encourage your child to have greater independence with choice making and communication. If speech is difficult for your child, use a choice board with photos or clip art to assist your child with making choices.
4. Keep your child comfortable! Consider climate, seating, and view through the window to assist your child in being as comfortable as possible. Allow your child to bring a comfortable object (eg. blanket or stuffed animal) to use in the car.
