Trouble at School!


 
Elementary school children are constantly exposed to new situations, and misbehaving becomes more common; even for kids that have no history of behavior issues.  As parents it’s important to be prepared for a phone call from school and have a plan in place.  First of all, keep your cool when you get a phone call from school.  Stay neutral in your reaction as much as possible by not defending your child or being negative without hearing his side of the story.  Allow your child to share his side of the story before expressing frustration with him.  Once both sides of the story have been shared, make a plan with the teacher to avoid the problem from occurring again.  Make sure you follow up with the teacher to be sure the solution has truly addressed the issue.  You may also want to follow up with your child!  There are teachable moments when re-visiting the problem and how it was resolved in a healthy manner! Your child will feel supported and empowered when you partner with the teacher to help your child learn how to resolve problems!!
