STRATEGY OF THE MONTH!

Making a plan for your child with food allergies is crucial when they are attending school!  School awareness and allergy reaction prevention has improved significantly over the years, but your child needs to be prepared too!  Here are some essential things to do in order to keep your child with food allergies safe at school!
1.       As a parent with a child with food allergies, be families with state policies regarding food allergy education, prevention and emergency care at school.
2.       Provide complete medical information to school staff that is easily understood.
3.       Your child’s medication should be clearly labeled.
4.       Schedule a time to meet with the school nurse and teacher to talk about your child’s allergy.
5.       Talk to cafeteria staff about your child’s food allergies, accommodations needed and the seriousness of the allergies.
6.       Have routine conversation s with your child regarding the seriousness of food allergies and how they can prevent a reaction (ie. Taking their medications, not taking food from other children, clearly identifying their symptoms, and understanding accommodations).
