A fun activity to encourage repeated language and simple signs for toddlers and preschoolers!
- A clean, sturdy egg carton
- Small manipulatives (dollar store, party store)
- Plastic eggs (Dollar Tree or Target)
1) Say, “Knock, knock, knock!” slowly. Knock on the egg carton. Wait for your child to imitate you. If he doesn’t, that’s okay.
2) Say, “Open,” with the sign for open on the carton.
3) Ask your child to pick one. If she’s grabby, cover up most of the eggs. After she picks, close the carton.
4) Say, “Pink egg,” or whatever color, and sign egg.
5) If he needs help, sign “Help” and ask if he needs help.
6) Open the egg and talk about what is inside. Examples: “A sheep! Sheep says ‘Baa.’ Sheep.” Or, “Spider! Eek! Itsy bitsy spider climbed up the water spout, down came the rain and washed the spider out…”
7) Start at the beginning again and take turns opening the eggs.
8) Talk about whatever you put in the eggs – it could be rolled-up doll clothes, plastic foods, a picture of a family member. The possibilities are endless!
NOTE: The small objects used in this game are choking hazards – make sure nothing goes in the mouth!
