ENVIRONMENTAL MODIFICATIONS FOR OPTIMAL SUCCESS
Brenda could bring out the best in the kids she worked with through making modifications to the environment and her own behavior. Here are some strategies you can try…..
Visual
• Minimize artificial light whenever possible
• Minimize bulletin boards, posters and other stimuli on walls
• Use neutral colors in the environment
• Fish tanks can be calming
• Use sunglasses with children with extreme sensitivity
• Use a tinted overhead transparency with a slit cut out of it, to put over papers during reading
• Adjust window shades for optimal level of alertness
• Reduce clutter in drawers and on surfaces
• Visit places or attend activities during less crowded days and hours
• Don’t force eye contact with a child who is over-stimulated
• Use visual cues (pictures, schedules) to provide structure
Auditory
• Listen to classical or other instrumental music through headphones
• Hum, whistle or sing quietly during work time
• Work in quiet spaces
• Educate and plan for sudden noises (fire alarm, tornado drills) ahead of time
• Limit distractions (others talking, radio, TV)
• Use a calming voice to talk with child
• Acknowledge, but do not dwell on, background noises not usually bothersome to others (flushing of toilet, ticks of clocks, etc)
