According to CNBC, childhood obesity is triple what
it was a generation ago! Poor diet and
inactivity can cause significant medical conditions as a child ages, including
increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, breathing
problems and trouble sleeping. Obesity
commonly begins in children at age 5-6.
Causes of obesity can include genetics, biology, and behavior and
culture factors. If a child’s parent(s)
are obese, their child is more likely to be obese themselves. Modeling healthy eating habits and being
physically active can help prevent obesity in your child.
Ways to manage obesity in your child include:
better sleep habit
develop healthier routines in eating habits (eg. eat slow)
plan meals and make better food selections that are lower in fat and calories
no soda pop and high calorie beverages
control portions and consume less calories
increase physical activity
send a healthy lunch to school
eat meals as a family at the table
don’t use food as a reward
limit snacking
limit screen time (a child who watches 2 hours of TV per day is 50% more likely to be obese than a child who does not)
