Craft of the Month: “Chick” this out!

We thought it may never come, but spring is here. Finally. After what seemed to be a never-ending winter (and yes, I know that it very well may snow some more this year, but I’m choosing to focus on today’s gorgeous sun and warmth!), we are embracing all things spring. The kids loved making chocolate nests and learning about birds, so of course our crafts have revolved around birds (well, baby chicks, because they’re oh so cute!). Check, I mean, “chick” out these adorable kid-friendly projects.

1.    Fingerprint Chicks. Ed Emberley is the king of “drawing books.” He can turn a fingerprint into just about anything, including these adorable chicks and bunny. This is a good beginning sensory activity where kids get just a little bit messy and the art is so easy and fun!

2.     Handprint Chicks. This is a great activity for a variety of reasons. Kids can work on tracing (we traced two different sized bowls to create the head and body), cutting, folding, and gluing. For older kiddos, this could be used to target following multi-step directions by giving them 1, 2, 3 (or all!) of the steps to complete and then having them follow through on their own. It’s also a great sensory activity, this time by covering your whole hand with paint for the feet and the wings.

3.    Stampin’ Chicks. These were created using an empty toilet paper roll dipped into paint and then stamped onto the paint. Easy, quick and cute!

4.    Rolled Chicks. This is another great project that could be used to target fine motor skills (cutting straight lines to make the rolls, stapling the rolls together, gluing on the body parts) and following directions.
